Welsh slate was formed when shale, which consists of clay minerals, was put under pressure with temperatures of a few hundred degrees or so. Then the clays begin to revert to the mica minerals from which they formed. This does two things: first, the rock grows hard enough to ring or 'tink' under the hammer, and second, the rock gets a pronounced cleavage direction, so that it breaks along flat planes.

 

The natural beauty of  plum Slate is perfect for uses as a mulch, driveways, paths, water features, seating and patio areas and is supplied in a bulk bag or a pod (equivalent to half a bulk bag) and will enhance any garden large or small. It is supplied in either 40mm or 20mm and looks at its best when wet so is also ideal around water features, but looks great next to rusty Slate paving, Indian sandstone paving, Decking, sleepers with the fact that it is naturally formed provides the perfect finish.

 

Ideally it should be laid on a weed suppressant material that is pegged down using mulch mat pegs to a depth of approxiamtely 30-50mm, the deeper the better if being used as a mulch for frost purposes or for water retention on the garden or raised vegetable beds.
